Synopsis:

Sick City promises a lot of things considering it being an award winning film in the category of best Nepali film in the Nepal Panorama category of the Kathmandu International Mountain Film Festival 2010. As the name goes by, one is plunged into the sick city Kathmandu, dirtied by drug peddling, prostitution, liaison between the two etc. After Batch no 16 you are once again confronted by actor Arpan Thapa and he doesn’t fail to impress the audience by his power packed performance. 

Sick City is the story of a city (Kathmandu) within which runs the dirty game of drug dealing and peddling and many more. Set in the backdrop of Thamel, Basantapur, Asan, the director has forked out the details explicitly. It’s the story of any ordinary man on the streets. 

Protagonist Krishna (Arpan Thapa), a hustler and a drug peddler, wants to make it big. He’s a poor married man with a child. Krishna always dreams of a rich life and to provide for his family all the luxuries. But he runs too fast after his dream. Every nook and corner of Thamel, Basantapur and Asan that is intertwined pulls out a powerful backdrop for the script. Treatment of tourists, illegal brothel in progress, use of drugs, late night dance bars are portrayed very realistically. The rickshaw puller, sweet shopkeeper, Manu, Maya, Laxmi gives the story a deeper meaning. 

The story also brings out betrayal and trust issues to the forefront when Krishna is doomed by those in whom he has complete faith and trust. Krishna is a paradox, a dreamer who chases unsubstantial dreams. The irony that even rich cannot buy happiness comes in the form of Manu. The fate of Maya (Sara Lama), Krishna’s wife and their baby, can be the story of many Mayas out there. 

Struggling to earn to make ends meet by the rickshaw puller, Maya’s father, is also another reality bite. The end is something that comes as an unpredictable surprise and gives you goose bumps. 

Scripted, edited and directed by Murray Kerr himself, he has done a commendable job, indeed an award worthy film. Music by Shyam Nepali wonderfully blends with the film pulsating through every scene. A breakthrough performance and direction, Sick City definitely succeeds in highlighting the underdogs and their crashed dreams.
